I remember hating you for loving me / riding on the metro

a blurred, off-center shot of a map of the montreal transit system. it's reminiscent of the mbta's subway layout, eh?
unfortunately, it's in schematics that the similarities end. though my observation is based on merely three rides taken en route to the university of montreal campus at a quiet time of day, i was nonetheless impressed with the timeliness of service and general cleanliness of the metro. then, of course, there's the trains themselves. the interior design sports three-seat "L's" set back-to-back from one another along each side of the car and centered around the poles that passengers hold on to for balance; by striking an ideal balance between space-saving and seating accommodation, this set-up puts to shame the illogical multilevel approach the mbta has adopted from germany or wherever for the new green line trains. best of all, the montreal subway GRADUALLY accelerates from stand-still and glides nice and smoothly into stops, thanks in part to its being equipped with rubber wheels. no grinding, lurching starts or wrenching halts to speak of.
yes, the mbta carries the distinction of being the oldest subway system in the country, but it's about time it starts providing service consistent with the century we're living in. i think it would do well to take a cue from our neighbors up north.

It's amazing how clean the Metro is. Some of the stations seem about as old as ones found on our Red Line (a few decades old), but the tiles are nice and clean, there's no garbage strewn about, no rats.
