a couple of months back, when johnny damon appeared on the cover of boston magazine, alongside the quotation: "even being mentioned in the same sentence as Jesus or God ... i mean, those guys are awesome." in the history of all awesome things ever spoken, that has to be one of the most awesome.

They must have slightly edited his comment, because I'm sure it was probably more like:
"even...um...being mentioned in the same...um...sentence as Jesus or...uh...God ... um, i mean...uh...those guys are like, um, awesome."
I have to admit, I'm getting a little tired of his antics lately. Throwing pumpkins? His new plastic trophy wife (who he married because he was getting tired of his ex-wife and his 'annoying' kids) getting a regular segment on NESN for fashion??? I hope this cult of personality thing ends soon and doesn't become a distraction.
then there's the whole "queer eye" thing.
i don't know, i think the zany, eccentric angle -- not just on damon, but the team persona as well -- has been milked to the point of great distraction already, unfortunately. the 2004 team and season provided a profile and story that basically wrote themselves, and now the nation (u.s., not red sox) has this very easy lovable idiot association that it can make with the team and, i think by extension, the city. hopefully, the baseball being played doesn't get eclipsed by the off-field antics once the season gets under way.
