a little more on my weekend

i have to say it was a great pleasure this past weekend to play guitar again with my buddy devin, who continues to irritate me by being so modest while being so good, and who continues to inspire me to learn and practice more and do all that i can to elevate my playing, if only to keep up with him for the next time we jam.

i also had the pleasure of checking out the led zeppelin dvd while visiting my friends. i'll be picking this one up soon ... the jaw-dropping ten minute drum solo on moby dick alone is worth the price of admission. there's no question in my mind now that no one in rock music before or since bonham can touch what he was doing at a mere 20 years of age. i sound starry-eyed, and stoned, and like i'm in middle school for saying so, but damn, it's true.

Let's not ignore Mitch Mitchell either. Although for "When the Levee Breaks" alone, I might have to give it to Bonham.

it was always between bonham and moon for me, and after seeing that dvd, i came away with a new appreciation for what a difference playing with muscle can make, and i think bonham had an edge in that department. i do think that from a technical standpoint, moon is just as good, maybe even a little bit better, especially with the controlled fury. but bonham just has that sound of friggin' mountains being smashed into pebbles.

speaking of the controlled fury, that's something i always liked a lot about mitch mitchell. and then there's ginger baker. bringing it back to bonham, he saw ginger baker play live the night before a studio session for zeppelin 4, and was intent on outdoing him on record. that's where four sticks came from: he played the groove with four sticks at once to fatten up his sound.
