superlative

recently rediscovered, courtesy of whole foods market: virgil's root beer, the absolute finest rooty-toot i've ever had in my life.

the label says that it's "so rich and creamy, you'll swear it was made in heaven." it does not make this claim lightly. it also doesn't even begin to touch upon the complex flavor.

the first time i enjoyed this nectar of the gods was at dinner with my family at the coolidge corner clubhouse about 13-14 years ago. i was so taken with it that i insisted on bringing home the empty bottle with me to hold onto as a keepsake. my mom kept it underneath a cabinet in her kitchen over the years, and though she recently moved into new digs, i'm sure she managed to pack it away somewhere.

years later, i rekindled the old flame when i encountered virgil's at cha! cha! cha! in northampton. all subsequent burrito purchases had the privilege of getting washed down with it.

two weeks ago, i noticed they sell it in 4 packs at the whole foods a few blocks from where i live now.

it's a little like coming home.

it was the "mo vaughn," which i believe was actually a grilled chicken sandwich with cheddar, bacon and bbq sauce. i remember it was damn good.
