i can feel a phil collins backbeat coming in the air tonight, oh lord
off the top of my head, i can't think of any other song where the crescendo clearly builds TO the drums, rather than the drums being used to drive the crescendo itself. can you? songs where the the drums merely enter later in the music don't cut it, either. no "over the hills and far away" (although you might be able to make a case for "gallows pole"), no "behind blue eyes" (a new progression enters with the drums), no "rooster" (the guitar changes to heavy distortion when the drums hit). it has to be all about the drums ... i'm talking total spotlight focus.as an aside, my friend jared made a good point about this song. in the song, phil takes to task a man that he saw watching someone drown without lending a hand to help. it's like, phil, you were apparently there, too. so how come you didn't lift a finger?

The reason Phil did not dive in to save that person, was he had just finshed a Sussudio sandwich. He could not go in the water for at least 20 minutes.
You make a good point. Next time I see Phil Collins I'm going to kick him in the nuts.
I heard a story that Phil anonymously sent the guy who killed his friend tickets to his concert -- front row. This was before anyone knew the story behind the song. And in the middle of the concert, after singing the song, he goes down into the crowd and punches the guy.
I should have tried to see if this is true or fiction before posting this, but oh well.
