what the f, right?
i'm irreverent and floating, so here's the beginnings of a super self-indulgent little project: i'm going to try and name, to the best of my ability, all the video games i've ever beaten in my life without cheat codes. i'll start with the nes. here we go.ninja gaiden 1, 2, 3
contra, super c
castlevania 1 (on an emulator; it took me two hours to finally kill dracula), 2 and 3
lifeforce
zelda 2 (i remember beating the first one, but i think it was on someone else's saved game)
(btw, i never beat any of the original 3 super mario bros. without warping)
bionic commando
river city ransom
renegade
double dragon 1, 2
jackal
mega man 1, 2 and 3
golgo 13 - the mafat conspiracy
tmnt 2 - the arcade game
abadox
xeyxz
bad dudes
battle of olympus
batman
code name: viper
faxanadu
the guardian legend
kid icarus
jaws
rygar
robocop
mech storm
strider
street fighter: 2010
shadowgate
i don't think this is comprehensive by any means, but it's what i remember. i'll tack on more as they come.
thinking on this subject got me to thinking about things in the world of video games that i need to do before i die. this will be another ongoing list project. i'll start with the nes here as well. here we go.
beat "friday the 13th" - came oh so close to killing jason a third time.
beat "ghosts n' goblins"
beat original "teenage mutant ninja turtles" - probably the hardest game ever
beat "clash at demonhead" - this is personal. as a lad, i spent the better part of the day plowing through this game, only to be outdone at the end of the game by a doomsday bomb that generates a random password every time you play. oh, and there's no means within the game of determining what the code is: you have to fuss around with the symbols and hope for the best. after all my frantic efforts working against the clock proved futile, and the counter finally hit zero, all i was left with was a screen displaying empty space where the earth used to be, and the summation of human existence ensconced in the deadpan finality of two words: 'the end'. a sickeningly cheery dirge served as mankind's funeral march.
i bawled my eyes out. but i'll have my revenge.

I thought I could die in peace but I forgot about Ghosts and Goblins.
Does anyone know if there's a way to use a PS2 as an emulator -- burn NES ROMs to a CD or DVD and then play them off the PS2 console? Using my computer keyboard is pretty awkward.
It's a little pricey, but there are companies that integrate USB into classic NES controllers.
Or: www.zophar.net/consoles/psx.html
Ghosts and Goblins: as a middle-schooler I secretly stayed up all night beating this one, or so I thought. It stood as a proud gaming achievement, until a few years ago I discovered you needed to beat the fucker TWICE to see the real ending.
Back in those days, as often as not they sent you back to the beginning to start over when you finished, as in Super Mario Bros, so I just never thought anything of it. Alas.
My roommates and I played a few hard core rounds of Kings of the Beach last night (the 4 player volleyball game for NES) it got pretty intense. The result: Barry and Andy over Kyle and Erin 3 games to 2.
Irreverent and floating. That's nice.
didn't like that show "Nintendo Power" rate ghosts and goblins pretty high? i remember there was always a segment on how to beat this boss or that.
and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the bomb -- if not incredibly hard.
Did you beat contra without the codes? did anyone?
no codes. you get the spray gun early, then you get rapid fire, then you TAKE YOUR TIME getting through the first few stages (it's pretty easy to get through the opening board, providing you go slow) and then you start accumulating bonus lives. the fact that you have unlimited continues at your disposal makes it all the more feasible.
oops, i meant to say that you can pretty easily get through the first board without losing a life.
