abra, abra-cadabra

i used to get a kick out of david blaine street magic specials. i really liked that he wears a cold, stone-faced glare as participants freak out in the aftermath of a trick; i got the sense that he plays up his devilish countenance and dark magic arts for the mere satisfaction of fucking with people.

that changed last night, when i chanced upon "vertigo", a 2002 special they were showing on tlc that documented a stunt in which blaine balanced atop a 90-foot pole in manhattan for 35 straight hours. near the end of the program, there's this revolving shot of him perched on the tiny precipice accompanied by a voice-over in which blaine waxes on how the moment represents a disconnect from culture and politics, all while a ridiculous world beat soundtrack plays in the background (it's pertinent to note that he co-wrote, co-directed and served as executive producer for the special). it was at that point that i realized that oh, ok, he actually buys into the myth of his own myth.

that kind of behavior is reminiscent of this guy and his mesmerizing eyebrows ...

... and how i imagine this guy (smug celebrity chef todd english, lauded as a culinary magician) perceives himself and communicates on a personal level.

the postured suggestion of a deeper mystery and sophistication: very silly. hey fellas, let's not forget about when you were in high school and how you received about 50 some-odd wedgies and had your underwear stolen from the gym locker room and strung up on the school flagpole.

You better hope that David Blaine doesn't read this, or he might make YOU disapear and run your underwear up a flag pole, all the while having sex with Fiona Apple.
