probably my favorite passage from "room full of mirrors: a biography of jimi hendrix"

so while en route to toronto with the experience in 1969, hendrix was busted at canadian customs when mounties found heroin and hash tucked away in a piece of his luggage. here, the author, charles cross, is summing up the trial on the resultant charges, which took place in december. for the sake of context, this is how dire his case, which could have resulted in a lot of jail time, appeared on paper: since he couldn't deny that the police found narcotics in his possession, jimi's defense basically rested on the notion that a groupie managed to slip the party favors into his stuff unbeknown to him ... testimony in his defense amounted to "well, gifts of drugs are common from groupies."

anyways, emphasis here is mine:

" ... the case went to jury, who deliberated for the longest eight hours of Jimi's life. They returned a not-guilty verdict. Jimi said it was 'the best Christmas present I could have.' He flew back to New York AND IMMEDIATELY GOT EXTREMELY STONED ON HASHISH."
