back on the chain gang

my dad would always throw this song on the built-into-the-booth juke whenever we would eat at norwood's town square diner (which, strangely enough, found its way into a zippy strip, though maybe it's not really that odd, considering the source). i always suspected -- well, actually, i always knew -- that, despite it being a decent song with a nice little guitar hook in the chorus, the real reason that pop gave it a spin was because chrissie hynde perfectly fits the mold of his partial predilection for gaunt, kinda-homely women*. not to creep anyone out, but i think he took particular relish in the "heave, ho!" part.

btw, guitar-wise, "my city was gone", also by the pretenders, is a cool study in harmonics, economical blues phrasing and how to play counterpoint to a great bassline (the way the groove builds-up, topples down and builds itself back up all over again is awesome).

i don't know where the hell else to go with this.

* on a related tip, I promise to tell a funny little story involving my dad and joyce dewitt one of these days, though some of you already know it. **

** i'll bet you thought i was going to use that first asterisk to explain that my mom was an exception to my dad's taste for the bland. wrong. i'll do it here: note that i said it was a 'partial' predilection.

If this is like the story about Alan Thicke or the one about Bueno y Sano, then turn the car around; I wanna go home.

damn it all, hirsch! there's no grand deception to be found in this story, though, if you must know, joyce dewitt is not DIRECTLY involved. i guess i'll have to tell it sooner than later.
