requisite post on requisite resolutions

i realized yesterday that the only new year's resolution i made in earnest was to get rip-roaring drunk (painfully successful), and so i scrambled to come up with some possibilities to pursue while the year still has that magical minty freshness.

i ultimately decided to take on more commitments than i can reasonably expect to adhere to altogether, with sincere hopes that maybe one or two will stick. they each happen to fall neatly into one of four different categories.

this list is more for me, who will be obsessively checking my blog layout out of habit and letting these pledges to improve seep into my subconscious, than it is for you, who will give it a once over, maybe chuckle once or twice, then go about your business. feel free, though, to encourage and generally support me in any/all of these efforts. hell, why not make supporting me your own resolution if you're already hard up for one?

culinary
-learn to enjoy seafood, or at the very least condition myself to tolerate more of it.
-find more vegetables that i actually like, and perhaps take to eating salads like any big boy should.
-refine my recipes for bbq pulled pork. learn some new ones.
-become damned good at grilling steaks.

health/fitness/appearance
-no more smoking, or at least cut down to the point where i'm able to limit myself to one or two if i happen to be drinking.
-limit the number of times i'm up partying past the time they start playing the national anthem on tv to once a week.
-take up yoga classes under the tutelage of my friend jen (certified instructor) or boxing classes at bsc.
-drink lots and lots of water.
-rein in my saturday pig-out sessions a tad. avoid eating like a horse that's been liberated from a p.o.w. camp.
-shave at least every couple of days. keep the beardal stuff neatly-trimmed.
-settle on a hair-style and get it cut often enough to maintain it.

enrichment
-read more books in lieu of playing video games, preferrably lots of non-fiction.
-spend more time watching the history channel.
-listen to lots and lots of new music, especially in the styles of funk, jazz, hip-hop and guitar pop.
-become a more dedicated blogger.

guitar/music-making
-buy used vehicle for transporting all my guitar gear.
-regularly study guitar theory.
-continue refining guitar chops and technique.
-write really good bridges to tie up loose riffs and passages i've got kicking around.
-buy a half stack.
-buy a stratocaster.
-update my effects collection.
-play music with other people.
-form a damn band.
-record a demo.
-play out live.

Try classical music. Make that a resolution.

i think that's a hell of an idea.

you know, i neglected to mention other things and activities with soothing properties that i've set on the '06 agenda: among them, calgon bubble baths, followed by my curling up on the couch in my bathrobe with a pint of haagen-dazs to watch a feel-good movie like maximum overdrive.

i'm just a smart-ass. i really do like the idea of getting into more classical music. like good jazz, it never fails to put me in a peaceful mood, and listening to more of it would surely do wonders for my ability to write music.

What's currently in your effects collection?
I've got an old Boss chorus pedal and an old Hendrix wah that I never use, and an Digitech RP200 that I use all the time. I don't really use the effects on it, but the amp and cabinet simulations make my little Fender RAD practice amp sound pretty sweet.

i have a digitech rp7, which contains a smorgasboard of effects, though it doesn't do any one of them particularly well, save for delay, which isn't a terribly complicated effect to begin with. like your rp200, though, the rp7 is capable of producing great distortion tones, all courtesy of a built-in tube.

i also have a clyde mccoy vox wah (incredible; i'll never need another wah) and a broken digitech xp100.

my ideal amp and effects set-up would be: jcm marshall head, marshall speaker, boss delay, boss chorus, working xp100, ibanez tube screamer, and a phaser of make and model yet to be determined.

and the vox wah, of course.
