b-sides

a couple of posts that never made it past the draft stage:

the greatest breakfast ever?: basically a plug for johnny d's sunday jazz brunch. velvety-smooth scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese, savory sausage, expertly-seasoned and perfectly-fried home fries, a couple of triangles of buttery wheat toast, a meal set to unobtrusive, chilled-out, live jazz guitar noodling that enhanced the lazy, restful sunday afternoon mood, inspired me to sing its praises. i think i would have to nominate meg and dan's phenomenal brunch as the best breakfast i've ever had, however.

maybe the hippies were right. maybe there really IS something to those magic mushrooms that super mario is so fond of: intended as a response to a preposterous expose-style episode of the jane pauley show i saw one day as i readied for work that, on the grounds of pure addiction, likened video games to drugs. some doofus doc with a ph. d. in dumbassery guested and at one point baldly compared video games to cocaine. the best specimen they could find to drive home this bold premise -- at least as far into the episode as i was able to watch -- was a college student that sometimes indulges in 8-hour-marathon gaming sessions (not a freakish aberration representing the lunatic fringe, as many gamers do this) but still manages to pull down straight a's (a majority of those same gamers also do this). ridiculous.

I've never done cocaine or speed, but wouldn't be suprised if '80s video games were designed with them in mind...the repetive motion, increasing speed of the music...
